Beach Boys: Smiley Smile (1967)

When it comes to truly understanding musical theory and applying it to pop music, Brian Wilson is one of the few we can honestly regard as a god. This album, like most of the best, sold very poorly, and is dismissed by many as the Beach Boys ''weird or goofy" stuff. This mostly comes from "Mike Love Beach Boys" fans. Because this album, to me, is right up there with Pet Sounds. Brian Wilson was really on to something here, something that does not really exist on 2004's "completed" SMiLE. Smiley Smile defines trippy. This is Brian Wilson at his most psychedelic point. Unapologetically acid fueled, this album breaks all the rules. The only flaw of this album is that it includes Good Vibrations, which, don't get me wrong, is a masterpiece on its own, but it just does not fit into the flow of this album in any way. There is a logical reason for this. Brian Wilson objected to this track being included because it was not part of his concept, "a teenage symphony to god" but was included by Mike Love and other greedy swine to make sure the album would sell. These sad souls just didn't get it. They weren't a part of Brian's world, but the good news is, that unlike those who only know of SMiLE, we have a chance to truly get to know the Brian Wilson of Pet Sounds even more, by dropping LSD and listening to Smiley Smile, over and over again. I fucking LOVE this album. You're too late mama, ain't nothing up side your head, no more, no more, no more, no more.
